I studied to become an EFL teacher (English as a Foreign Language) as part of my undergraduate degree. I majored in Irish history and the Gaelic language (Irish) by the way! I started university in 1999 with the intention of becoming a Gaelic/Irish and music teacher but found that I loved oral social history and continued to take a PhD in oral history. I gave up studying music after my first year as I felt that it was taking away my enjoyment of music. I LOVE music and couldn’t live without music in my life but when I was forced to learn a particular way, I soon lost interest and changed my career focus to language teaching.
After graduating, I started teaching in a wonderful language school in Wexford and I realised how wonderful it was meeting new people weekly. It broadened my horizons. My love of culture and desire to travel grew and I made many international friends. I then went to teach in a university in Dublin and enjoyed teaching academic courses there. Without boring you with all of the details, all of these amazing experiences shaped my career and led to the establishment of Power-Quinn English.
Keith and I share the same love for travel, culture and meeting new people so once we had bought our own home here in Northern Ireland and our twins were old enough, we decided that the time had come to open up our home to people who want to advance their English fluency in a relaxed and friendly environment. We both have the skills and experience and know how to help our students to make progress quickly.
We believe that our small establishment sets us apart from other schools because we genuinely care about your English progress! Our school is in our home and we take a maximum of 8 students per week. Students have all their meals and spend their full days with their teachers as opposed to only having a set number of formal lessons per week as is traditional in English language schools.
We teach mixed ability lessons and do lots of co-operative learning because we believe that students can support and help each other in all English skills. We take time to sit and relax with our students and help them to speak with confidence, continuing the learning process outside of the formal lessons. We organise street lessons and enable our students to speak with locals and we do many activities to allow our students to practice and develop their English fluency in the afternoons, evenings and at the weekend.
Our aim is to advance your English fluency, ensure that you make wonderful memories with us here in Northern Ireland and make friends for life!
A warm welcome awaits you here!
